On the Cusp

After a night of rum and diet cokes and a couple movies including Ted (which was disappointingly unfunny, by the way), I stepped on the scale this morning and hit a familiar number - 266.6. This is just .6 pounds above the all-time low I achieved earlier this month while dieting for a mere 3 days (I'm still not sure how I accomplished that). In other words, I am on the cusp of breaking new ground. I'm not sure if this 2.4 pound drop has to do with the fact that alcohol is a diuretic, but it would be a safe bet. I'd hovered around 271 all weekend and suddenly yesterday, 269, and today, 266.6. It's all happening so fast...

Don't worry, I don't plan to drink every day like I used to. I've hardly had anything in the past week, which is a good start to this diet. I should say that alcohol in moderation is considered acceptable in a low-carb diet, but should be avoided initially, and, just like food, what you drink should be researched before consumption. Certain wines are totally acceptable, the drier the better (usually 3-4g, which ain't half bad), and distilled spirits usually contain zero, which is wonderful. I chose rum and diet coke last night, which ultimately resulted in zero carbohydrate ingestion. That said, even though it is possible to stay on keto with alcohol, alcohol does postpone the digestion of anything else and is quite caloric, even spirits with no carbs.

I probably did not wait long enough to indulge - generally it is said that the first two weeks you should avoid alcohol - but I don't feel I've cheated myself too much. Heck, I actually made the most progress yesterday.

I should also mention that I weigh myself every day in the morning before ingesting any liquids or food, always on the same scale and always wearing only boxers. This is for consistency. Although, sometimes I poop beforehand... Anyway, a lot of people say, "weigh yourself once a week." Well, in my experience, it makes no difference. As long as you are in touch with the fact that you might not have lost any weight, and don't get frustrated if you've even gone up a pound or two. I do this to monitor my progress carefully, and because it gives you something to look forward to every morning.

I do not, however, keep track of carbs this carefully. I go by memory of generally how much I have had on a given day, and beware certain foods more and more throughout the day if I feel I haven't been good enough. The system works, don't worry.

I am very pleased to weigh this much today. I am on the cusp of making some real progress for the first time since December, and of losing some serious weight in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.
